Footnotes

(1) and Carl, the Rennie, who paddled me down the river, and played his flute when the current carried us;
and John, the bouncer, who would just come and silently stand between me and any guy that was bothering me;
and Russ, the DJ, who used to tell all the musicians to keep their hands off his daughter.
and David, who would go to bars with me, and pretend to be my boyfriend only if I wanted him to.
and Crazy Jim, who used to help me wash my cats.
and Hufi, the ever-patient Knight of Pents.and all the roadies . . . and bikers.
Tough on the outside, full of honor and affection on the inside. Thank God.

(2) "the Knight gives an emblem of midnight"
My first thought was that the emblem would have to do with the winter stars. Then I thought I would look up what stars were visible at midnight on the night I did Lesson 47. I got up to look for my star chart, but then I thought that might be cheating. But how can one cheat in a game of one? It is, after all, my *own* thing (project, meditation, work, quest, . . . ). Anyway, I didn't find the star chart . . . so he gave me one.

(3) I know the star wheel looks a little cheesy, and doesn't correspond exactly to my description, but I'm no artist. Just trying to get the idea across.

(4) Schneeglöckli means 'snow bells' and they are the first flowers to come up in the early spring in Switzerland.

(5) Sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano.

(6) Ricola makes a famous throat-soothing sugar candy made from Alpine herbs.

(7) This meditation took so long that I forgot to get the gemstones from the minors in the second half.

(8) The Shrine of the Stone is Westminster.
